A developing agent for silver bromide gelatin emulsions.

Amidol made negatives grayish black, with very little fog.

It was favored over other alkaline developers because it could facilitate faster exposures.

Used in the dye manufacturing industries and as a color accelerator in photographic developers. It is also employed as a pharmaceutical intermediate.
