Used as a catalyst in the synthesis of keramamine C, a carboline alkaloid that is isolated from the Okinawan sponge Amphimedon sp.

Also used as a catalyst in the synthesis of Tolvaptan, a selective oral vasopressin V2-receptor agonist that is used to treat hyponatremia.
